Understanding Warts: Identifying, Preventing, Treating

Summer is the season for enjoying outdoor activities, but it also brings a higher risk of encountering warts. Warts are viral and can be caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). They appear as non-cancerous skin growths that can be unsightly, bothersome, and sometimes painful. At Revival Dermatology, we understand the impact that warts can have on your skin and overall well-being. Let’s explore the different types of warts, treatment options, and essential prevention tips.

What Are Warts?

Warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus. They can vary in appearance – from skin-colored and rough to flat and smooth. The most common ways to contract the virus are through direct contact with an infected person or object or by injuring the skin, making it more susceptible to the virus.

Types of Warts

There are different types of warts, each with its own characteristics:

  • Common Warts: Often found on the fingers and hands; may have black dots
  • Foot Warts (Plantar Warts): Common on the soles of feet, often painful
  • Flat Warts: Smaller and smoother, tend to appear in large numbers
  • Filiform Warts: Thread-like growths, common in areas around the mouth, eyes, and nose

Warts in the Summer

It’s important to note that warts are more prevalent in the summertime. With outdoor activities and increased exposure to communal spaces like public pools and locker rooms, the risk of picking up the virus is higher. Consequently, being mindful of preventive measures during this time is crucial.

Prevention Tips

As stated earlier, warts are easily spread by contact with the virus. Preventing the spread of warts is essential and can be achieved by following these dermatologist-recommended tips:

  • Refrain from picking or scratching warts
  • Wear flip-flops or pool shoes in public showers and pool areas
  • Avoid direct contact with someone else’s wart
  • Keep foot warts dry, as moisture can promote their spread

While anyone can get warts, certain individuals are more prone to the HPV virus, including children and teens, those with weakened immune systems, and individuals who bite their nails or pick at hangnails.

Seeking Treatment

Although warts often disappear without treatment, some cases may require the expertise of one of our board certified dermatologists.  It’s important to seek professional care if you have multiple warts, warts that cause discomfort or pain, or if you have an underlying health condition like diabetes or a weakened immune system.
